POLKYTH LEISURE CENTRE - In a recent retro-fit installation at Polykth Leisure Centre, a Powerboss Eluma solution was implemented to replace 16 x 400W SON high bay fittings. Owing to the yellow "streetlight" nature of the light delivered, not only was there a requirement to save energy but to also increase light levels. An installation of 24 x Powerboss Eluma were therefore implemented. Even with this increase in numbers, a significant saving was delivered in energy and the kWh related Climate Change Levy (@ 4.3p p/kWh). Additionally, an annual reduction of 13.79 tonnes of CO2 was delivered, contributing significantly to the sustainability targets of the Centre and the Local Authority
Interestingly, positive feedback was also received from members of the public using the Leisure Centre who saw that the auto-switch off feature was helping the environemnt by saving unnecessary energy usage.

In the UK, 0.43kg of CO2 is emitted in the generation of every kWh. It is clear therefore that by reducing electrical energy usage and hence the need to generate that power, CO2 emissions can be reduced accordingly.
Just 1 x 400W high pressure sodium or metal halide light fitting which is burning 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 52 weeks per year is responsible for the emissions of 1.69 tonnes of CO2; per year.
For a family car such as a Renault Megane to generate the same CO2 emissions it would have to travel 14083 km - this for many people is their annual mileage. This level of emissions is also equivalent to one adult's share of the CO2 emissions on an international flight from London Heathrow to Denver in the USA; and back again! Therefore a warehouse or industrial facility with 300 to 400 lights is equivalent to the whole airplane!
The above calculations do not take into account the reduction of waste from the disposal of redundant lamps from the re-lamping process which is so costly for a conventional lighting system. The recommended Osram lamps for Eluma are guaranteed for 3 years; hence less lamps will require costly disposal over the coming years.
